Connector mechanical specification and test requirement

As we mention in previous article, specification can be divided in to 4 parts (electrical, mechanical, environment and environment protection data) as different connectors are applied in various environment and different type of connector are needed, such as rectangularconnector, circular connector, pogo pin connector, twist pin connector, micro d connector(d-sub connector), etc.

Mechanical data:

1.       Mating and unmating force
Ensure connector functions and customer usage
Test method- MIL-STD-1344D, 2013.1
Main point for test:
b. Test axis is the right direction of connector using
c. Test speed 25.4mm/min.
Specification requirement-:
a. Mating force 35N Max
b. Unmating force 7N Min. (initial); 3N Min. (final)

2. Locking force
Guarantee connector connection and function in case of emergency.
Test method N/A
Main points for test:
a. Whole connector shall be tested (full assembly)
b. Test axis is the right direction of connector using
c. Test speed 25.4mm/min.
Specification requirement 30N min

3.       Retention
Promise contact performance won’t be influenced by external force.
Test method- EIA-364-29
Main points for test:
a. Whole connector shall be tested (full assembly)
b. Test axis is the right direction of connector using
c. Test speed 25.4mm/min.
d. Destructive test
Specification requirement 4.9N min

4.       Normal force
Ensure connector with low contact resistance and friction force.
Test method N/A
Main points for test:
a. Positive contact stress will happen under working condition
Specification requirement 60~150g

5.       Durability
Test method MIL-STD-1344A, 2016.1
Main points for test:
a. Test axis is the right direction of connector using
b. Test speed 200~500 cycles/H
c. No loading during testing
Specification requirement
a. Confirm all the data, such as mating and unmating force, contact resistance, insulation resistance, withstanding voltage, sealing performance, etc.
b. Check appearance

6.       Cable pull-out
Make sure that cable or connector won’t be damaged by external force.
Test method EIA-364-38
Main points for test
a. Speed 89+/-4 N/min., load 1H
b. Static load 40N for 1 min
Specification requirement Check appearance

7.       Visual and dimensional inspection
Sure connector appearance, size and quality.
Test method EIA-364-18
Main points for test
a. Appearance test
b, Size test
